What Happens During TPE

What the session actually looks like

A typical Therapeutic Plasma Exchange session is a structured clinical process requiring careful preparation. Most treatments last between 2 and 4 hours, depending on individual medical requirements. We strongly recommend arriving early to settle in and building an extra 30-minute cushion into your daily schedule to allow for post-procedure monitoring and a gradual return to activity.

Step 1 — Check-in

When you arrive, a nurse will review your recent health status, take your vitals, and confirm your treatment plan for the day to ensure optimal safety.

Step 2 — Access

The medical team will establish vascular access, usually through two peripheral IV lines or a central catheter, ensuring a consistent and comfortable flow during the exchange.

Step 3 — The Exchange

Your blood is gently drawn into a specialized centrifuge where the plasma is separated from your cells. The plasma is then replaced with a sterile substitute before the blood is returned to your body.

Step 4 — Monitoring

Throughout the session, clinical staff continuously monitor your vital signs and calcium levels, making real-time adjustments to ensure the process remains comfortable for you.

Step 5 — Finishing Up

Once complete, access lines are removed and vitals are re-checked. You will spend a short time resting with a snack and hydration before being cleared to leave for the day.

You do not need to 'tough it out.'

Most symptoms are easier to manage when you mention them early. Our team is here to support your comfort at every stage of the exchange.
