Recovery & Aftercare
What the rest of the day should look like
What to expect after TPE
Fatigue after TPE is common. Cleveland Clinic says most people recover within a few hours, but Johns Hopkins patient guidance still recommends hydrating for at least 24 hours, eating well, minimizing physical activity for several hours, and watching access sites for bleeding. The sensible patient message is: expect the rest of the day to be lighter than usual.
Good recovery habits
Drink extra fluids unless your team gave you a fluid limit
Eat a good meal
Take it easy for the rest of the day
Watch IV or line sites for bleeding
Keep your discharge instructions where you can find them quickly
Medication check after treatment
ACR notes that TPE can remove some medications, including some IV medicines. That does not mean your medicines are wrong. It means your team needs an accurate medication list and may care about timing on treatment days. Always tell the team about new prescriptions, supplements, and over-the-counter products.
When recovery is not going as expected
Call if you develop the red-flag symptoms listed on the safety page, or if the access site starts bleeding, looks infected, or becomes more painful.
